Good Bandwidth v. Bad Bandwidth >>

The most important question to ask is what will you be using the bandwidth for? When IT professionals investingate bandwidth options, it is easy to get trapped in a battle over price per megabit. In perfect competition, all bandwidth would be equal and may the best price win. Good or bad, there will be vendor differences.

Many bargain bandwidth options are available, but they may not suit the needs of your organization. In other cases, you may find the price you want, but the delivery requirement is not available. The key is organizational need, including the following:
  • Type of usage, browsing, email, etc.
  • Time used.
  • Number of employees.
  • Internal applications to be used externally.
  • Volume mostly inbound or outboud.
  • Type of connection options available.
  • Reliability expectations.
  • Future expectations.
Not all of these may be important to you, but it is important to at least classify these points before making a decision. This will give you a way to more accurately compare vendors.
